Airtel Malawi is taking connectivity to the next level. The telecom giant has officially launched nationwide VoLTE (Voice over LTE) services while expanding its 5G network across the country—a move the company says will transform how Malawians communicate and access digital services.
The new VoLTE service is now live on all Airtel sites, offering:
- Crystal-clear voice calls
- Faster call connections
- The ability to use the internet while talking for compatible devices
At the same time, the 5G network, already active on 56 sites in 10 districts, brings ultra-fast speeds and low latency, opening doors for:
- Smart city solutions
- E-health and telemedicine
- Online learning and digital classrooms
- Advanced business and enterprise applications

Government Supports the Rollout
Minister of ICT, Shadreck Namalomba, praised the development, calling it a “major step for Malawi’s digital future.” He highlighted how better connectivity can empower students, farmers, and entrepreneurs, helping them access new opportunities and fully participate in the economy.
Namalomba also pointed out that 5G isn’t just about speed—it can support services like real-time agricultural updates, telemedicine, and other digital solutions that improve everyday life. He encouraged investors to support local phone manufacturing and assembly, ensuring more Malawians can access these next-generation networks.
Airtel’s Push for a Connected Malawi
According to Aashish Dutt, Airtel Malawi Managing Director, the rollout is the result of years of planning and network expansion. He said VoLTE and 5G are more than just technical upgrades—they are tools to create new opportunities and position Malawi for a fully digital future.
To support this, Airtel has strengthened its infrastructure by:
- Expanding international fibre links via Tanzania and Mozambique
- Reinforcing local transmission lines
- Adding 90 new sites nationwide
These moves, Airtel says, reflect the company’s commitment to innovation, accessibility, and digital inclusion. As part of Airtel Africa’s presence in 14 countries, the company aims to ensure that more Malawians can benefit from a connected, tech-driven future.
